A History of Leadership and Service
Since its charter in 1976, the Alexandria–Fairfax Alumni Chapter has played a significant role in advancing the ideals of Kappa Alpha Psi throughout Northern Virginia. Across decades of service, mentorship, and civic engagement, generations of brothers have strengthened the chapter’s reputation for leadership and community impact.
The milestones below highlight key moments in the chapter’s journey, from its earliest foundations to the achievements that continue to shape its legacy today.

1976 - Chapter Chartered
On June 5, 1976, the Alexandria–Fairfax (VA) Alumni Chapter became the first alumni chapter chartered in the Northern Virginia area. Brother Roosevelt Phillips served as the chapter’s first Polemarch.
1977 - First Line of Initiates
The first initiates to begin the chapter’s lineage were six brothers in the fall of 1977: Alexander Currin, George Davis, Beamon Meadows, James Taylor, Arthur Varnado, and James Young.
1984 - Special Olympics Community Service
In January 1984, Alexandria–Fairfax organized and hosted a Special Olympics event at South Lakes High School in Northern Virginia, reinforcing the chapter’s commitment to community service.

1990 - Scholarship Endowment Established
The Alexandria–Fairfax Kappa Scholarship Endowment Fund (AF-KSEF) was established to support students pursuing higher education. To date, the fund has awarded more than $1 million in scholarships.
1991 - International Chapter of the Year
The Alexandria–Fairfax (VA) Alumni Chapter received the international award for Chapter of the Year from the Grand Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

1993 - First Kamp Kappa Program
Alexandria–Fairfax helped lead the charge under Grand Polemarch Robert Harris to establish the first-ever Kamp Kappa. This nationally recognized Guide Right program has served more than 1,500 young men ages 10–16 since its inception.

1993 - Laurel Wreath Laureate Recognition
Brother Ambassador Dr. Edward J. Perkins became the 43rd Laurel Wreath Laureate,the highest honor awarded in Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., and the first of several such honorees from the chapter.

2000 - Golden Heritage Committee Established
The chapter became the first in the fraternity to establish a Golden Heritage Committee, honoring brothers who reached 50 years in the Bond. The inaugural induction recognized Brothers William Walker, Cortelyou Payne, Stanley Porter, Rivers Burrell, and Siegel Young Jr.

2009 - Young Brothers Committee Created
Alexandria–Fairfax became the first chapter in the fraternity to establish a Young Brothers Committee (YBC) for members age 35 and under, creating a dedicated space for younger brothers to connect, collaborate, and lead.

2010 - NOVA Project Giveback Initiative
Beginning in 2010, NOVA Project Giveback became a trusted community tradition. Alexandria–Fairfax played a central role in building and sustaining the initiative, helping provide vital resources to hundreds of Northern Virginia families each year.
2010 - Eastern Province Leadership
Brother Dwight Thomas was appointed the 24th Eastern Province Polemarch, becoming the first brother from the Alexandria–Fairfax Alumni Chapter to serve in this role.

2010 Multipurpose Chapter Facility Acquired
Alexandria–Fairfax became the first alumni chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi to acquire a multipurpose facility in Northern Virginia.

2011 - LEGO Robotics STEM Program
The chapter launched the fraternity’s first LEGO Robotics program, expanding STEM access for underrepresented youth through hands-on engineering, teamwork, and problem-solving. The inaugural team competed regionally and earned the Judges’ Award.

2013 - Beautillion Program Established
The Beautillion program was created to mentor and prepare young African-American men for adulthood through leadership development, mentorship, and recognition of achievement. The program has since ushered more than 100 young men into adulthood.

2016 - Diamond League Publication
The “Diamond League” publication was created by chapter Reporter Brother Dr. Kenneth J. Taylor as a special edition of the AF Khronicle honoring Laurel Wreath Laureate Brother General Dennis Via. The publication inspired Grand Polemarch Thomas L. Battles to feature four distinguished Alexandria–Fairfax generals on the cover of the Kappa Journal.

2016 - NSBE Jr. Partnership
Brothers Antonio “Tony” Harrison and Marlon Ridley initiated a partnership with the National Society of Black Engineers Jr. (NSBE Jr.), which later evolved into a national initiative between Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and NSBE.

2020 - Aviation Clinic Program
Alexandria–Fairfax launched the fraternity’s first Aviation Clinic, introducing youth in Northern Virginia to aviation careers through mentorship and hands-on learning. One participant, Naomi Hill, later earned her pilot’s license in 2025 before graduating high school.

2021 - Scholarship Foundation Facility Acquisition
AF-KSEF acquired the chapter’s multipurpose facility, further strengthening the foundation’s long-term commitment to community programming and educational support.

2022 - AF Experience Established
The chapter launched AF Experience, marking the first time it hosted a full Kappa Week celebrating the anniversary of the chapter’s charter.
2025 - Centennial Province Council Host
The Alexandria–Fairfax Alumni Chapter served as host for the Centennial Province Council for the Eastern Province.

2025 - Scuba Diving Certification Program
The chapter established an AF Scuba Diving Certification program for teens in the Northern Virginia area, expanding youth development opportunities from land, to sky, and now to sea.
